Scripture: 2 Kings 4:8-17

Any time while reading the word of God and you see the adjective of a person, great, you should stop and study the person. In this scripture, we don’t even know the woman’s name, but she was described as great. Are you simply satisfied with who you are? Are you sitting back with a whatever attitude? Are you actively working for the Lord? Are you trying your best to be great for God? Now this woman was not trying to be great. She wasn’t looking for a pat on the back.

She constrained him to eat bread. She was very intent for this man to eat at her house. There are people in this world that feel the need to feed others. It doesn’t matter what they go through in order to feed others, they want to feed them anyway. They don’t do it because of any other reason other than giving, feeding others.

She also supported the work of God. Many people support some really good causes but none of these will ever amount to anything unless it’s for the Glory of God. She told her husband that they were going to build a room just for this man of God. Not just for man but for God. She was committing her resources and her time for the Glory of God.

She had done some great things for this man of God to further the ministry of God. Do you ever think that God is watching in your life at the things that you do? Is He watching you when you made a choice to go on to the church house when you really didn’t feel like it? When you gave to that person in secret not because you wanted something back but because you felt you needed to help them. The woman didn’t want anything in return other than to give her life and resources to God.

She was going to be blessed with a miracle that no one else could do but God. If you do the best you can and strive to be the greatest with God then He will surely bless you. If a prophet back in those days said something and it didn’t come true then they were put to death. It ruined their reputation. This woman was less concerned about herself and more concerned for this man of God. It was more important for her that something happen to her than something happened to him.

We see in the next verse that she gave birth to a son just as the man of God said. Later in this child’s life, something happen to him and he died in his mother’s lap. She took her only child to the chamber that she built for this man of God and only for this man of God. She laid her child and laid him on the prophet’s bed and left him there. She took the problem to the Lord and she left it there. She then went to the man of God but not until she summoned her husband. He had no idea what she was doing. She told her husband before she left that it would be well. Past tense. She took off and arrived at Mount Carmel and the men of God saw her coming. She knew and she told the men of God that everything was alright. Just as she, we ought to be the same. When we get into the presence of God we should know that it is well. God can make all things well. She didn’t know what she was asking for or talking about because she was so distraught. She would not leave Elisha’s side as they headed back to her house. Elisha then went into the room with the problem by himself and shut the door. After Elisha did what he needed to do the child rose, sneezed 7 times, and was fine. Now instead of this woman grabbing her only son and loving on him, she fell at the man of God’s feet and thanked him. She then raised up and took her son out of the house. That’s the last we hear of her.

There was nothing special about this woman yet the scripture declares her as a great woman. All she did was devote her life to the kingdom of Christ.

One day they will bury you. What if someone wrote a book about you? What would be their first sentence about you?
