Scripture: Mark 14:3-11

The difference between a hypocrite and a pretender is that a hypocrite has an evil motive.

Judas Iscariot
  • Called by Christ just like the other eleven disciples. He ordained them all.
  • He saw the miracles that Jesus performed. He was able to see things that we’ve never seen.
  • He heard every message that Jesus preached. He heard the King of Glory, the Lamb of God preach.
  • He heard every invitation that Jesus gave to those around him.
  • He was in every crowd that surrounded Jesus.
  • He didn’t understand what Jesus was doing and why.
  • He carried on his pretending until he kissed Jesus on the cheek

A Pretender
  • Christ called and they went to an altar and thought they were saved. They go through the motions of a saved person but they lack the forgiveness of their sins.
  • They see the same thing that a Christian sees yet they are unmoved by them.
  • Many hear the Word of God today yet they are unmoved.
  • They reject Christ at every invitation they hear.
  • They like to be surrounded by the movement of Jesus, and the attention it might bring.
  • Do not understand Christ and the motivations He has.
  • Will continue pretending until they die and end up in front of God Himself.

We don’t always know who is a pretender. We often times assume they are okay and are saved because of what we witness. No one knows other than God Himself if a person is saved or pretending. They sit among us and we have no idea.
1 John 5:13; A lot of people think they are saved yet we have some ways to tell.
1 John 1:6-7; walk in darkness instead of light, love the flesh more than God.
1 John 1:8-10; say they are sinless.
1 John 2:3; does not keep God’s Word.
1 John 2:9; says they are in the light yet hate another person.
1 John 2:15; they love the world more than God.
1 John 2:22; denies Jesus.

Not one pretender will be in Heaven. In fact, the Bible is clear that there will be people who tell God that they did many things in His name yet God never knew them. They were not saved and were just going through the motions.
